Lovely and unusual antique hand painted opal floriform glass vase. Possibly British glass by Richardson or maybe made by Baccarat Glass, 4th qtr. 19th century. The vase is beautifully decorated with an artfully enameled bird on a tree limb next to a nest with eggs. Flowers and leaves surround the bird and a butterfly rests on the stem of a flower. A garland of delicately hand painted flowers decorates the turned down scalloped top edge of the vase. The scallops on the top edge are ground and beveled. The bottom of the vase has a ground pontil and is marked with the number 2. The decoration may be a combination of hand painting and transferware, a process that dates back to the 1840's.
