Description

Fabulous Museum Quality Schwarzlot 17" Vase or Pokal with Artistically Enameled Scenes

Mouse over image to zoom. Click photo to view larger image and other views.

RARE 19th Century Schwarzlot pokal or vase featuring beautifully hand painted scenes:  a man on horseback greeting a woman next to a child standing on a wall; musicians and two other groups of people walking along a road in front of a castle. It's an amazing painting, very finely detailed. The more you look the more you see. The base of the vase is decorated with a bellflower, daisy and scroll motif with applied raspberry prunts. The base also has applied rigaree around the top and bottom. Magnificent.

Probably circa late 1800's. No idea who the decorator was but they were very talented.  It is much more detailed than the Lenhardt pieces.  The painting on the vase is more the quality of the decoration by Daniel and Ignaz Preissler.

Schwarzlot, black lead / lot, is a slightly translucent black medium that's painted on and fired in a kiln. Its ink-like / wash properties allowed the creation of finely detailed designs.

Size:  top 6" diameter;   16 5/8" high

Condition: small chips and roughness on inside edge of foot - only noticeable when vase is held upside down;  small chip on bottom rigaree - will not photograph;  bottom edge has been ground on part of the base - not sure if this is original to even out the bottom edge & keep the vase from rocking or if it is post production;  glue type residue in clear area top of vase - have not tried to remove it and don't know if it will come off

Shipping:  All glass is shipped double boxed so it should travel safely.  Insurance is included in shipping.
