This wonderful platter is best described by Bessie Lindsey in her book,  American Historical Glass :   "Four Symbols:  Plymouth Rock 1620, sinking ship 1776, rising sun above the water, and full rigged ship 1876,  seem to say that a colony was established in 1620, British rule was scuttled in 1776, and the sun of a new nation appeared on the horizon.  In 1876 the new ship of state sailed on, full speed ahead.  Possibly the mold maker drew his inspirations from the poem, 'The Building of the Ship,' by H.W. Longfellow.' "
Give us this Day our Daily Bread is incribed on the border.  Each end is decorated with a sheaf of wheat.  This platter is probably a Centennial commemorative.   Made by Gillinder & Sons, circa 1876.
Size:   9" wide;     12 1/4" long
Condition:   large flake and a series of small chips on inside lip
Item ID: 1003
